The story kids walk into

You have probably played the claw machine at a fair and lost. The prize sat right there. The claw hovered. You pressed the button. The claw descended, closed around the prize, and then — let go. That was not bad luck. That was engineering. Fairground claw machines are designed, on purpose, to have a weak grip. The operator sets it. Weak enough that the claw rarely holds, strong enough that it sometimes does, so you keep trying. The prize is always almost within reach. The claw that wins is not stronger. It is controlled differently. In the machines that actually move things — the ones that dig roads, lift car bodies off assembly lines, operate inside patients — the claw does not lose its grip. Not because the motor is bigger, but because it is driven by something that cannot be compressed, cannot leak force, and transmits every Newton from your fingertip to the jaws at the end of the line. Liquid. A tube full of water from here to there, sealed at both ends, with a piston at each end. Push one piston in. The other one comes out. The force travels instantly, around corners, through any shape of tube, with nothing lost. Today, your team is going to build one.
