The Sunrise Apartments residents' group chat has been going since Wednesday. It started with one message from Farooq bhai: "The milk this week tastes thin." Then another: "Mine too." Then: "Watered for sure." Then a voice note, then a counter voice note, then someone posted a photo of their tea looking pale, and now nobody is speaking to the milk seller and the milk seller is threatening to cancel all six buildings. Opinion is unanimous: the milk has water in it. Proof: none. "It tastes thin" is not evidence. "My tea looked pale" is not a measurement. A chat full of agreement is still just opinion. What this situation needs is not more messages. It needs a number. A reading from something that does not have feelings about the milk seller, cannot be talked into a different result, and gives the same answer every time the same liquid is tested. It needs a float that sinks exactly as far as the liquid lets it — no further, no less — and has a scale on its side so anyone can read the result and nobody can argue with it.
