The Windmill Grid

Grade 10 · NCERT: Sources of Energy · 2 periods
What it covers
NCERT chapter — Sources of Energy
What kids learn
Renewable energyelectromagnetic generationturbine blades and torqueenergy conversion
  • Identify wind as a renewable energy source and trace the energy chain to a lit LED
  • Explain how a magnet sweeping past a coil pushes current through a wire
  • Construct a wind turbine that lights an LED from moving air alone
  • Predict how blade pitch changes output, then test with measured results
  • Troubleshoot a dark LED by tracing the spin and current path
  • Transfer the pitch result to real wind farm blade design
Why it works
If that LED ever lights, the electricity was made from moving air — because there is nowhere else it could have come from.
The story kids walk into

The hamlet of Dhanwara sits on a ridge. Forty-three families. Good wind — the kind that blows most of the year, steady enough to keep a kite up without running. No electricity. The power company sent a quote: ₹18 lakh to run a line up from the valley. The families collected for two years. They are still short. The line is still not there. Meanwhile the ridge has the one thing a turbine needs: wind. A wind turbine does not burn anything. It does not run out. It converts the motion of air into the motion of a magnet past a coil, and that motion pushes electricity out of the wire and into whatever is connected to the other end. The machines on real wind farms are big because they need to power towns. But the physics is exactly the same as a motor the size of your thumb, a set of cardboard blades, and one LED. If you can make that LED glow — from a fan, from a breath, from blowing across the blades with your mouth — you have done what every wind turbine in the world does. The scale is different. The principle is identical. Today, your team is going to build one small enough to fit on a desk and use it to understand something large enough to power a ridge.
